 I started Tuscan Estates in 1996 with just one property - the house in the Chianti region of Tuscany that my wife and I have rented for ten of the past 15 years on our annual trips to Italy. Since then, our portfolio of rental properties has grown to more than 2000, a collection that ranges from a studio apartment in one of Tuscany's charming converted farmhouses to a luxurious palazzo with complete staff. Before starting Tuscan Estates, I was in the catering business and traveled to Italy each year for inspiration and recipes. I quickly realized that the only way to get the best of Italy was to become part of the culture - sampling not just the olive oil but the shade in which those olives were grown, selecting wines at the Enoteca and then getting to know their vintners and the subtle differences in their vineyards, learning the recipes of this magnificent culture from the creators of the cuisine. Renting a place that becomes your base and then heading out on day trips to explore the countryside lets you discover secret treasures you wont find any other way. (Plus there's nothing like gathering a market basket of gorgeous produce, pasta and cheese and bringing it home to your own Tuscan kitchen. Trying doing that in a hotel!)
