DOMAINE DI CAMPO VERDE
GULF OF ST. FLORENT
|
Sleeps 8/10
The Domaine di Campo Verde is a private,
45 acre, seafront estate sweeping down to
the warm waters of the Gulf of Florent with
panoramic views over the tops of ancient
olive trees and mature cypresses to the sea,
across to the lovely citadel-port of St.
Florent, and along the coast.
Entry to the estate is by high wooden gates
off a country lane. The long drive is flanked
by ancient cypresses as it meanders past the
guardian's house, rising gently through an
olive grove, and then curving round to
parking for several cars under the shade of
a giant Eucalyptus tree. The archway leading
through to an entry courtyard is graced with
jasmine and flanked by orange and
clementine trees. The villa itself was
inspired by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright:
pure geometry and a relatively low structure
so as to blend in with the land with horizontal
lines and rooftop terraces; sober architecture
with walls the color of Corsican earth.
The décor is the essence of elegance and
Simplicity with high ceilings painted in
whites and beiges, and white, pale yellow
and blue for the guest bedrooms. With
beautifully tiled bathrooms and marble floors,
the furnishings are a harmonious blend of
custom made pieces, David Hicks furniture,
and pieces from the best Paris boutiques.
The owner, a Paris art dealer, has decorated
the villa with world-class modern art and
sculpture, a host of tasteful objet, artifacts,
and fine prints with enhanced designer
lighting. There are sea views from almost
every room. Light and color are everywhere
in this serene home.
The villa is very well equipped with good
dinnerware, cutlery, glasses and household
linen. A stereo system, DVD player, SAT
TV, telefax and alarm system are among the
many refinements. The pool is not heated
since it retains its warmth from April to
October-November. There are two
motorized boats for guests use: the charming
21-ft wooden "pointu" and the faster 23-ft.
Jeanneau.
The extensive Mediterranean garden was
designed by the current owner with the
concept that it must be in harmony with the
surrounding maquis: vast grassy areas
planted with over a hundred 200 year-old
olive trees, ancient cypresses left
untrimmed, giant arbousiers with their white
flowers and strawberry like fruit; gorse,
lentisques, and box hedges, rock gardens,
over thirty orange and clementine trees.
The
pathways are bordered by lavender, wild
herbs and an enormous variety of local plants.
Further way from the villa, there is the hard
tennis court surrounded by olive trees, and
orchard with apricot, pear and fig trees,
and a kitchen garden as well as a flower
garden. Just to stroll or quite simply relax
for a few hours in this haven of tranquility
and natural beauty calms the mind and
completely removes the stress of everyday life.
Directly in front of the villa and linked to the
main decking: magnificent green swimming
pool (over 60 feet in length) with a giant
lentique surrounded by agapanthers on an
"island" linked by a bridge to a raised deck
with teak-based garden furniture.
A typical day at Domaine di Campo Verde is leisurely and unhurried: an early break
followed by a trip down the coast to the many coves and beaches at Desert des
Agriates where on can sea swim; back home for a light lunch washed down with a chilled
Corsican rose; swimming in the pool, snoozing, painting or writing in the shade of
an olive tree away from the villa. For the most sportif or younger members of the party,
sailing, windsurfing or diving under the auspices of the nearby ecole de voile.
Dinner
usually taken at the villa and followed by easy conversation inspired by the experiences
of the day. Or the start of an evening in the quayside cafes and music venues of St. Florent.Domaine di Campo Verde is just a few hours from London and ideal for a small group or family wanting a sumptuous retreat offeringthe greatest of the Corsican experiences.
